I would have to say that there are a different variety of women out there in the media for girls to look up to . Back in my day (we wont’ say when), it was mostly stick figures that you were suppose to be like, everyone was disappearing and how were girls suppose to compete with that. What about the girls who weren’t built to be sticks, like me?
I do appreciate now, that there are people like Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce, who made it ok for women and girls to have curves and some meat on their bones, and still be considered beautiful.
There is a wide rage of body types for girls to see in the spotlight from stick figures to plus size women who are making a way in the entertainment business.
I have come to realize that skinny will never go away. Models will always be around and be the “fashion norm”, there is no escaping that reality. However when I see girls like Niki Blonsky from Hairspray, Queen Latifah, Camryn Manheim, who are not sticks, become successful and be able to work in the entertainment business and hold there own in the spotlight of the media, I sense hope for the young girls of today.
Of course there still is weight stereotyping in today’s society. For example, when Jessica Simpson gained weight that is all people talked about, again putting negative images into young girls minds. Even though she did gain weight, she didn’t hide herself from the media, she put herself out there and showed girls that it is OK if you gain weight, you are still you and you shouldn’t be embarrassed about that. Similarly with Christina Aquilera, who recently gained weight, She also didn’t hide herself from the spotlight, she embraced her new body and gave a positive message.
